Thyra Travels: Long Layover in Zagreb

My next official destination is Barcelona, but my flight left from Zagreb, Croatia. I came a few days early to see the city and get the vibe of the people. I arrived around 2am, super late because of long waits at the border crossing from Serbia. I walked from the bus station, about 30 minutes, because if there is one thing I have learned in my travels – NEVER take a taxi from the bus station. I have been scammed, yelled at, harassed. No more, taxistas. This girl is walking!

I woke up late the next day and took advantage of the free computers at the hostel. This is a true luxury. I am super behind on my blogs. I went to get some groceries at the store and made a sandwich for lunch. After midday I decided to take a long walk to a cemetery on the outskirts of town. A long and hot walk, I fell in love with the neighborhood I was going through. The houses were so picturesque and I found myself dreaming about living in one, particularly the one that had their own vineyard. The cemetery reminded me a lot of the one near where I grew up, lot of trees and HUGE. I sat by the water spout and watched many people come, get water, and clean off their loved one’s graves. After a while I made the trek back to town.

My second day was spent in a similar fashion – lots of hot walking. I set off early and walked to the center of the tourist section of town. This part also had a nice vibe, but with a lot more people and buildings. It was shaping up to be even hotter than the day before. I paid a visit to the famous ‘Museum of Broken Relationships’. It was super interesting and a good way to spend a few hours. On the walk back, I stopped at the drugstore and stocked up on toiletries before my flight. Why do you always run out of everything at the same time? I spent the rest of the afternoon writing blogs and doing my finances. It is almost a year now that I am traveling! Wow. Surreal at times.
